The New Jersey WiffleŽBall Association (NJWA) welcomes all the WiffleŽBall fans to the best WiffleŽBall website on the Internet. Established in 1990, the NJWA has helped dozens of WiffleŽBall Leagues and Associations around the Country get started in the World of competitive WiffleŽBall.
Many of us first experience Wiffle®Ball, in the backyard with our parents as little kids. However, “real” baseball and softball takes over and the plastic bat and balls find their way in the trash or behind and under Dad’s mess in the garage. Some players however can maintain their love for the game of Wiffle®Ball by balancing their Little League activities and continue playing Wiffle®Ball. Thus is the case with the players of the NJWA, creating the New Jersey Wiffle®Ball Association (NJWA), which holds their annual State Tournament in July at Patrick Pone Playground and Trenton Babe Ruth in South Trenton.
Mike Palinczar is the President of the organization, which is located in the park where he, Fred Bastedo (vice-president), Matt Brophy (chief umpire), and several others played as youngsters. Denice “Pidge” Stoj serves as the groups official scorer.
It wasn’t an easy start for the NJWA. The Park was badly in need of repairs. Litter and graffiti was about all that occupied the park, but Palinczar and his friends spent many days fixing and painting before hosting the Nation's First Sanctioned League in 1990. The group held it’s first Tournament later that year with 22 teams participating.
Palinczar, back in 1989, saw an article in Sports Illustrated on Wiffle®Ball with a tournament being held in Boston, MA featuring a replica of Fenway Park, with a Green Monster and replica scoreboard. That year Palinczar along with the Trenton Giants made the trip to Boston to see if they could compete with the “Big Boys.” They finished an amazing 10th in the World. After seeing the interest, Palinczar, along with Fred Bastedo created the NJWA which now hosts an annual tournament on eight fields and 70 teams or more.
“We built our organization from scratch,” Bastedo said, “our field took months to complete, sometimes I don’t know how we did it.” The NJWA is expanding every year. In 1992 and 1999 two teams came from California to play on the Trenton field. |
